Mother and Child
A photo of my grandmother holding my Uncle Oscar, c. 1935. She married my grandfather right after high school, and must have been about 21 years old in this photo. Notice the Easter basket and bunny. Uncle Oscar grew up to become an electrician for the U.S. Navy, married a lady from the Virgin Islands, and fathered six children in Boston. Grandma had another baby in 1936, and that baby eventually became my mom.
This is my favorite photo of my grandma. She looks proud to be a new mother.

What a lovely photo. Grandma looks so young and pretty. When people had their photo taken in the 1930s it was a special occasion and they always looked so good. Digital photography is great in so many ways but perhaps the sheer accessibility of it makes us less inclined to make the effort to have a proper photo sitting. This photo must be a real family treasure.
yes, having a photograph taken back then was truly a big deal. I've noticed that people in old photographs tend to look very sober ... almost never smiling. It was a serious occasion.
